Wow! Did you know that Google Earth does not censor or block out images that the government might deem “sensitive”? I didn’t, until today.
Just out of curiosity’s sake, I plugged Washington, D.C. in to Google Earth and was amazed that I could see the top of the White House, not a blacked out square, as was the case with MapQuest satellite images (which mysteriously disappeared one day a couple years ago). Well, I thought, if I can see that, which I would think is pretty sensitive information, what else could I find? What about Area 51 (aka Groom Lake)? So I go searching the Nevada desert (listen to me, I sound like Indiana Jones), using the now magical seeing eye that is Google Earth, but I can’t find it. No surprise though, I really have no idea here in Nevada it is and I don’t know the address. Side note, does it even have an address?
So, this morning I get into work and being a bit bored, I do a search for “google earth area 51 coordinates”. The first site I find The Daily Grail (Google Earth Tour) has a list of some interesting sites to look at. From the Giza pyramids (29.975, 31.13) to, yup you guessed it, Area 51 (37.24, -115.81).
So I’m intrigued now. What places have you found? Post the coordinates here.
